The Character

Full Name: Wang Yao

Appearance:

Typically, Yao dresses more like a 17 year old Asian boy than a 20 year old Asian man. He tends to wear baggy clothing, and prefers shorts or baggy pants to any sort of suit anyone might try to get him in. He also always has a hair tye to match what he’s wearing, whether it’s the same colour as his bag, or the laces of his shoes. It always matches, subtly. His shoes always tend to be more typical of a teenager, than someone his age. He wears runners, or boots occasionally.

Yao has long black hair, which he insists stay in a ponytail. In fact, the only time you'll find him without his hair in a ponytail, is when the director of a shoot has bribed him somehow to change it. When it’s down, it’s completely straight. He’s rather vain about his hair as well, making sure to take the best care of it. If someone were to tell him he has a split end... He’d probably end up pulling the hair out rather than risking the “ridicule” it would bring him. Not that he’d ever actually have a split end, he’s too careful for that.

Yao has golden brown eyes, that are normally rather energetic even when he’s upset, or angry. Though this is only an illusion, because Yao tends to feel tired, even exhausted, rather easily. His nose is small, yet defined. His lips are often described as both “pouty” and “the perfect size for his face”. His features are feminine, so he is sometimes mistaken as a women. He’s been asked to pose as a female before, but refused outright.

Yao is about 169cm (5' 6½"), with a slim build. He’s probably 58kg (127.9 pounds), but he has a slight fear of scales, so even if he’s forced to weigh himself, he doesn’t look. 58kg is slightly thinner than he should be, but he’s always been that way, and he knows you need to be thin to model, so he ignores it. He’s slightly curvacious, but if you took off his shirt you’d see he actually does have the slightest bit of muscle.

Personality:

Yao has been called many things, including old fashioned. He tries and tries to get away from the old ways of his country, yet finds himself returning to them time and time again. Which is ironic, because he also likes to think himself a modern person. He’s stubborn in that way, because he refuses to see that perhaps really he is just old fashioned. Or that he’s a mix of the two.

Yao has a habit of being the “victim” even though he knows very well he could defend himself, he allows himself to get walked over. Even though he could just say “no” he gets frustrated and does things anyways. People will ask him to do something, he’ll insist he doesn’t want to, while doing exactly what was asked of him.

Yao is a very honest person, though he’s also very secretive. It takes a lot to get close to him, and even then he doesn’t share his secrets. He has no problem voicing how he feels about a situation though, or how the situation should be dealt with. Though, normally he doesn’t go through with any feelings he expresses. It requires too much energy on his part, and he just can’t be bothered.

Yao also has a very nasty temper once you push him too far, to the point of breaking things, or completely ending friendships on the drop of a dime. He often feels badly for it later, but he then feels that if he were to go an apologise, it would make the other person in the right. So quite often he’ll sit on the fence, waiting for the other person to apologise to him first.

Yao loves his food, he denies that his parents have anything to do with it. But he will pretty much pause anything for good food. Often times, even though he claims otherwise, he actually wants to share his food, and see other people eating happily. Unfortunately he hasn't had many opportunities to actually cook for his friends, seeing as he hadn't had many.

Reason for Modeling:

To try and slight his parents. Actually he wants to get into modelling so his insecurities can be healed, but he'll never tell anyone that.

History:

Yao and his parents moved to America when he was very young (About 5), starting in New York, and then moving to South Gate, Los Angeles, when Yao was 10. He had to relearn how to communicate, as well as how to live in the new society. He had a lot of trouble learning English, as well as integrating into the new city he was living in.

All throughout his school years he was picked on for having a different accent, as well as looking different. He began to worry about his appearance, always worrying about how his face looked, or if his hair was the wrong style, even about his weight at times. He was told everything under the sun, that his eyes were too small, his hair too long, he was too heavy and too thin at the same time.

Finally, Yao decided he preferred being too thin to too heavy, and began weighing himself everyday. Worrying about whether or not he was the right size, and skipping days of eating because of it. This didn’t bode well with his parents, who were both still struggling to make ends meet, as well as maintaining the tradition that everything must be eaten off your plate, for fear of there not being any later.

When they found out that he was skipping meals, they punished him in the old fashioned way, and he began to avoid scales like the plague. Associating them with the punishment he’d gone through. Even though he still made sure to watch what he ate, he never weighed himself willingly again.

Yao’s parents, at the time, opened a Chinese Food restaurant, which just earned him more ridicule at school. He did learn a lot of cooking techniques from the restaurant itself, but he began to resent his parents. Feeling that their old fashioned way of living was not only impairing his ability to make friends, but also making it impossible for him to integrate into American society.

Yao, by this time, had almost completely lost his accent, and began rebelling against his parents. The first thing he did to slight them, was to start dressing in a more “youthful” manner. The second, was to refuse to go to university. The step that completely estranged them, was when Yao applied to work in a modelling agency. Yao honestly wanted to give it a try, and deep down he felt it would probably heal a lot of the insecurities he had from school.

This move caused his parents to kick him out, so Yao moved to Hollywood, with all his savings.

On the outside Yao says he joined modelling to make his parents angry, but on the inside he’s using it to heal his own insecurities. And hopefully make some good friends.

Yao sighed, here he was and it was his first day... And he should be excited. But all he could bring himself to be was nervous, his knuckles were aching. He wasn’t sure if that was caused by his nervousness, or he was pretty sure it was. He tended to get more random pains when he was nervous or upset.

What if he walked in, and they all turned to him and laughed? Yao stood in front of the building, looking up at it in dismay. Should he get surgery and look like all those pretty American actors and models he'd seen in magazines?

No, surgery was a disgusting way of altering one's appearance. He'd rather cut off his ears. He cringed, and opened the front door. Finally. He wondered, more like worried, momentarily, if he'd ever be able to make enough money to live on his own. He also wondered, for a little longer, what had possessed him to forgo university.

Looked inside the agency, realizing that a few people were looking at him, but trying to ignore it. He didn’t want to enter, he wasn’t sure how to give himself that final push. He wanted to prove to himself, and everyone else, he wasn’t weak. Yet...

He stood in the door way the entire time, holding open the door, but not entering.
